MICHIGAN NONPROFIT ASSOCIATION

Meritel Group has become Michigan Nonprofit Association Member
Meritel Group as a member of Michigan Nonprofit Association Member offers with onsite, remote, network, LAN/WAN, web development, VoIP and security support solutions to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations.

The Michigan Nonprofit Association is the collective voice of Michigan's nonprofit organizations. MNA serves as a statewide network for the sector, a resource center on effective management practices, and as an advocate for the nonprofit community.

Organization's History:
Incorporated in 1990, as the Michigan Nonprofit Forum, the organization was first a think-tank dedicated to discussing issues impacting nonprofits. In 1994, the organization was renamed as the Michigan Nonprofit Association to provide direct advocacy and services to local nonprofit organizations.

Mission:
The Michigan Nonprofit Association enhances the effectiveness of the Michigan nonprofit sector in serving society.

Size and Nature:
Michigan has 43,000 nonprofit organizations. Of these 23,000 are 501(c)(3) nonprofits, which means their purpose is religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary or cultural. Donations to 501(c)(3) nonprofits are deductible, on the federal level, within certain limits.

Scope:
Michigan's nonprofit sector ranges from large institutions like Michigan State University or the University of Michigan to small groups like local food banks. Nonprofits work with every issue of concern to Michigan residents - from education to health, human services to the arts, economic development to the environment.

Roles:
Michiganians look to nonprofits to:

Deliver services needed in the community.
Provide avenues for citizens to get involved as volunteers.
Serve as a testing ground for solutions to community problems.
Develop public policy options for government to consider.
Provide a voice for underrepresented citizens.
Educate the public on issues facing our society.
Provide structures for citizen participation in a free society; and
 Provide opportunities for religious worship

The goals of MNA are to:

Provide membership services - such as information on fundraising, management, taxes, and technology; offer discounts on services such as director and officer liability insurance, long distance telephone, classified ads, and office supplies.

Provide training and technical assistance - such as regional workshops on nonprofit management, legal issues, volunteer management, board development, lobbying, and other nonprofit topics; and host annual statewide conferences, such as Grantmakers/Grantseekers Conference, Volunteerism SuperConference, and a public policy day.

Promote nonprofit involvement in public policy - through MNA's program, the Michigan Public Policy Initiative, policymakers are educated on the critical issues affecting nonprofits, MNA acts as the advocate for sector issues on the state and national level, and MNA works with partners to increase lobbying and advocacy by charities.

Promote research on the sector - MNA works with Michigan universities to develop new and promote existing research about the Michigan nonprofit sector. Research is then distributed to practitioners, funders, policymakers and the media.

Economic Impact:
Charitable organizations are sometimes called the "third economy" because of their financial prominence. Together, the annual budgets of the more than 1 million nonprofits in the country amount to $700 billion. In Michigan, the nonprofit sector spends about $27.5 billion annually, and roughly 95 percent of this remains within the state. According to the latest figures available

The assets of Michigan nonprofits exceed $60 billion.
The nonprofit sector provides about 380,000 jobs in Michigan, an average annual wage of $26,000, and nearly $10 billion in personal income annually.
The Michigan nonprofit sector is the fifth largest industry in terms of employment in the state.
Michigan ranks ninth in the country in the number of charitable organizations, eleventh in the amount of assets, and eighth in the amount of annual expenditures.

Membership:
Membership is open to all Michigan nonprofit/tax exempt organizations. For-profit organizations and governmental entities are also welcome to join as affiliate members. There are currently 700 members from across the state. Dues for nonprofits are on a sliding scale based on budget size, and range from $75 to $1,000.

Partner Organizations/Affiliates:
Connect Michigan Alliance, Michigan Campus Compact, Michigan Community Service Commission, and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan.
